About Maybe Huge

For Founders. By Founders.

Big ideas are
easy to find.
The useful stuff
shouldn't be hard.

What this is

Canada has no shortage of ambitious founders, interesting companies or organizations trying to help them succeed.

What it doesn't always have is an easy way to see the whole picture.

Maybe Huge is an independent Canadian startup intelligence and media platform built to make the country's innovation ecosystem easier to navigate, understand and pay attention to.

We're bringing together the resources and opportunities founders need with independent reporting about the companies, people and ideas being built across Canada.

No digging through dozens of websites to figure out what's open. No wondering whether a program still exists. No breathless coverage of every startup as the next big thing.

Just useful information, good stories and a clearer picture of what's actually happening.

We're starting in Atlantic Canada. We're building for Canada.

Why Maybe Huge?

Because every startup is,
by definition, a maybe.

Some ideas won't work. Some will become great small businesses. Some will quietly transform an industry.

And some might be huge.

We're interested in all the stuff that happens before anyone knows which is which.

The experiments. The pivots. The first customers. The programs that actually help. The capital that gets companies moving. The founders figuring it out as they go.

And we're interested in making that ecosystem easier to find in the first place.

Atlantic
Canada,
first.

Maybe Huge is Canadian in scope, but we're starting at home.

The first version is mapping the startup resources, opportunities and activity across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.

The goal is to build something genuinely useful here first — then take it across the country.

That means a founder in Halifax should eventually be able to discover an opportunity in Vancouver they didn't know existed. Someone building in St. John's should be able to find relevant expertise in Waterloo. And people elsewhere in Canada should have a better way to discover the companies emerging from Atlantic Canada.

Atlantic Canada is the starting point. Canada is the map.

Who's behind it?

Laurie Batten

Founder

Maybe Huge is being built by Laurie Batten, a journalist and strategic marketing and communications leader who has spent more than a decade covering, working with and telling the stories of Canadian technology companies and startups.

Laurie began covering Canada's technology and startup sector in 2013 as a multimedia journalist, reporting on companies, founders, investment, innovation and the people behind emerging technologies across the country.

She later moved from covering the ecosystem to working inside it. For nearly a decade, she has led strategic marketing and communications for technology and innovation organizations, working directly with founders, researchers, startups, ecosystem partners and the programs designed to help companies move from idea to commercialization and growth.

That combination matters.

Maybe Huge is being built from both sides of the story: an understanding of what makes information credible, interesting and worth publishing, and years of experience seeing how Canada's startup ecosystem actually operates — how founders find support, how programs reach companies, where information gets lost, and how difficult it can be to understand what's happening beyond individual announcements and success stories.

Maybe Huge brings those perspectives together to build something that has been missing: an independent, useful and credible source of startup intelligence, data and reporting built for Canada.

Not another place to cheerlead everything labelled innovation.

A place to find what's here, understand what's happening and pay attention to what might be next.
